Local Life

The western Hudson Valley — Black Dirt farms, mountain trails, world-class art, and small-town character.

The Black Dirt Region

Cricket Frog Hollow sits in the heart of western Orange County's Black Dirt Region — 26,000 acres of ancient glacial lake bed producing some of the richest agricultural soil in the Northeast. Onion fields, vegetable farms, and diversified growers stretch from Pine Island through Florida to Warwick. The landscape is flat, open, and dramatically fertile — dark soil against green rows, framed by the Pochuck and Kittatinny ridges.

This is the food shed that supplies our kitchen. Many of the producers you'll taste at breakfast grow within a 10-minute drive of the property.

Farm & Table

The agricultural economy here is real and accessible. Farm stands, creameries, orchards, and tasting rooms line the roads between Florida and Warwick.

Farm Stands & Markets

Black Dirt–region farm stands sell direct from the field: onions, lettuce, root vegetables, cut flowers, preserves. The Warwick Valley Farmers' Market (Sundays, May–November) gathers regional producers in one of the Hudson Valley's best small-town markets. Pine Island hosts its own seasonal stands along Pulaski Highway.

Cider, Wine & Spirits

Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery — hard cider, fruit wines, and apple brandy from their own orchards. Applewood Winery on the same route. Pennings Farm Cidery in Warwick serves ciders, wood-fired pizza, and seasonal events with mountain views. All within 15 minutes.

Dining

The Stagecoach Inn in Goshen (8 miles) is one of the region's oldest continuously operating inns — lunch, dinner, and a bar in a 1747 building. Warwick village (14 miles) has a walkable downtown with farm-to-table restaurants, bakeries, and cafés. We keep a curated list of current favorites at the front desk.

Outdoors

Two state parks, the Appalachian Trail, and a network of county preserves — all reachable in under 30 minutes.

Goosepond Mountain State Park

The closest state park to the property — 1,558 acres of hardwood forest, wetlands, and rocky ridgeline. Moderate hiking trails with views across the Moodna Valley. Birding, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Quiet, uncrowded, and ten minutes from the front door.

Harriman State Park

47,000 acres of wilderness 25 minutes south. Over 200 miles of trails — from easy lakeside loops to full-day ridgeline traverses. Swimming at Lake Welch and Tiorati in summer. One of the largest protected areas in the lower Hudson Valley.

Appalachian Trail

The AT crosses Orange County through Harriman and the Pochuck Valley — within striking distance for a day hike. The Pochuck Quagmire boardwalk section (Vernon, NJ, just across the state line) is one of the trail's most distinctive passages: a mile-long elevated boardwalk over wetlands.

Wallkill River & Local Preserves

The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge spans the valley to the southwest. Orange County Land Trust preserves — scattered across the region — offer quieter walks through meadow, forest, and stream corridors. Ask us for trail conditions on any given weekend.

Art & Culture

World-class art institutions share the valley with craft villages, harness racing, and historic estates.

Storm King Art Center

500 acres of monumental outdoor sculpture in New Windsor — 20 minutes east. One of the world's leading sculpture parks. Plan a half-day; the scale rewards slow walking. Open spring through fall.

Dia:Beacon

A former Nabisco box-printing factory on the Hudson River, now one of the most important contemporary art museums in the country. Massive-scale installations by Richard Serra, Dan Flavin, Agnes Martin. 40 minutes northeast. Worth every minute of the drive.

Sugar Loaf

A craft village 10 minutes south — working artists' studios and shops in converted barns and cottages. Handblown glass, pottery, woodworking, painting. Small, walkable, and seasonal. Fall festival weekends draw visitors from across the region.

Goshen Historic Track

The oldest harness racing track in the country — live racing in summer, with the Harness Racing Museum adjacent. Goshen's main street is a walkable strip of restaurants, shops, and civic buildings. Eight miles from the property.

West Point

The United States Military Academy sits on the Hudson bluffs 25 minutes east. Guided tours, the West Point Museum, cadet chapel, and Trophy Point with panoramic river views. Football Saturdays in fall are a regional event.

Walkway Over the Hudson

The world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge — spanning the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie, 45 minutes north. A linear park 212 feet above the water, connecting to rail trails on both banks.
